Reflexology for Menopause
I have seen an increase in the number of women with peri menopause and menopausal symptoms seeking out reflexology. For some women their symptoms are occasional and manageable and for others they can be debilitating. Common symptoms my clients present with are hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, low mood and lack of sleep to name a few.
Perimenopause and menopause are a natural aging process which all women will go through. It is a time when the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone are decreasing. The median age for a woman to start their menopause journey is 51 years, though it can start much earlier and later than this.
Withdrawal from lifelong hormones can be difficult to adjust to and puts significant stress and strain on your body. Many of my client are prescribed HRT and others choose to navigate this time with changes to their lifestyle. No matter your approach, reflexology can be helpful and supportive.
During a reflexology treatment I aim to target reflexes and acupressure points that promote deep relaxation and those that stimulate the body to rebalance. Easing and balancing emotional and physical symptom can have a positive impact on your quality of life and my clients often report seeing improvements with their sleeping pattern, reduced hot flushes and their anxiety symptoms being more manageable.
Here is some research which show that reflexology might be effective in decreasing vasomotor problems (flushes) and increasing quality of life in women in the menopausal period.

And other research has found that foot reflexology can be effective for reducing women’s depression during menopause.
